This indicator combines the value added generated by domestic information industries with the value added generated upstream by other domestic industries to meet final demand for information industries’ goods and services – via domestic interconnections and participation in global value chains (GVCs).
For example, meeting global demand for smartphones requires the production of basic metals, glass and inputs from non-information business services.
A country or region’s information industries footprint is expressed as a share of the world total.
Information industries include manufacturers of ICT equipment, providers of ICT services and the “content and media sector”. They are approximated, due to the limited availability of more detailed data, by “Computer, electronic and optical products”, “Publishing, audiovisual, and broadcasting activities”, “Telecommunications”, and “IT and other information services” (see notes).
